Last term, our school Gardening Club made bird seed feeders using a mix of lard and various bird seeds in preparation for the colder weather.
Winter poses considerable challenges for the birds, especially when temperatures plummet - our polytunnel thermometer recorded a chilly -6.8°C on Wednesday night. Providing food sources during this time is vital for their survival. Birds require high-energy nourishment to sustain their fat reserves, crucial for staying warm throughout the night.
This week, we placed our feeders in the trees on the school field and at our bird feeding station in the wildlife garden. By doing this, we are ensuring that the birds frequenting our school grounds have access to essential nutrition. We were thrilled to see a robin enjoying the tasty treats immediately after we set up the feeders!
Our children understand the importance of creating a diverse range of welcoming habitats for all creatures. We will be continuing our efforts to support the wildlife that visit our school garden throughout the year with the building of a bug hotel, bird boxes, hedgehog houses, a small wildlife pond and hibernaculum.
