This week’s Gardening Club was all about using our harvest in plot-to-plate learning! The full growing cycle has been experienced — from planting the seeds and nurturing the crops, to harvesting and enjoying what has been grown.
We celebrated with campfire popcorn, baked sweet potatoes, and sweetcorn tossed in butter — which used the last of our second batch of later-sown corn. The children did a great job shelling the colourful kernels from the cobs to make their own popcorn — it was a huge success!
We also learned about how animals help with seed dispersal. Everyone became a “squirrel” and hid five corn kernels around the school field… but when it was time to retrieve them, no one found all five! A great (and funny!) way to show how animals forget where they’ve buried their food — giving nature a helping hand.
What a fantastic autumn harvest-and-learning session for our young gardeners!
