Today, Year 5 had a visit from Adrian Warrell aka The History Man. It was an exciting afternoon in Year 5 to kickstart our new History Topic, The Ancient Greeks.

Children were taught all about life in Ancient Greece with a focus on where they got their food from, the clothes they wore and how they have left their mark on life today- from feta cheese to democracy.

Year 5 were impressed to learn, that with even realising, they were speaking Ancient Greek by using words like democracy, dehydration and academy. Children learnt about how wars started (mainly over food or land) and about the introduction of democracy and The Olympics.

Then, came the activities. As always, children LOVED the practical activities which helped them better understand what life may have been like for them over 3,000 years ago. Year 5 had a go at some weaving (which was very tricky), ground corn to make flour, tried their hand at fishing using a net which required centra-fugal force, carved their names into some pieces of pottery and of course, tried on some Greek clothing.

An excellent start to our topic. All of the children really loved the afternoon, asked lots of questions and I'm sure will bring this enthusiasm back with them into the classroom.

A huge thank you to Adrian!
