Today, Year 4 combined Computing and Science as they explored how electrical circuits work.
The lesson began with the children trying to build real circuits using bulbs, batteries and wires. Unfortunately, the equipment had other ideas! After a few technical difficulties, we switched to creating electronic circuits on our Chromebooks instead.
The children were shown the different components they could use, but the challenge was theirs: could they work out how to build a complete circuit and make the bulb light up?
At first, there was plenty of trial and error. We had circuits that would not work, wires connected in the wrong places and even a few batteries that caught fire on the screen after being given far too much power!
However, Year 4 showed brilliant perseverance and problem-solving skills. Before long, children were successfully creating working circuits and explaining why they worked. Some even took the challenge further by adding a switch so they could control when their bulb turned on and off.
It was a fantastic way to bring Science and Computing together, with lots of experimenting, debugging and learning from mistakes. Thankfully, the only fires were virtual ones!
