Year 4 had a fantastic time taking part in a very special Egyptian Day in school.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Hilary Wilson, also known to the children as the Egyptian Lady and Nonna to one of our pupils, for coming into school and bringing Ancient Egypt to life for us. The children absolutely loved the day and it was full of fun, learning and memorable experiences.
To begin the day, children were invited to come to school dressed in Egyptian costumes, which helped everyone get into character straight away. Throughout the day, the children explored what life was like in Ancient Egypt, including how families lived, how children were educated and why writing was so important. They practised writing in hieroglyphs, added their names to special cartouches and learned more about Egyptian food, celebrations and traditions.
One of the highlights was visiting the Egyptian marketplace, where the children found out how people traded before coins were used. They enjoyed buying and exchanging goods, haggling for the best deals and learning how different items were valued.
In the afternoon, the children took part in a fascinating Egyptian funeral, learning about mummification, the journey to the afterlife and the importance of the Weighing of the Heart. This helped them understand more about Egyptian beliefs and why the afterlife was such an important part of their culture.
The day ended with a wonderful Egyptian party. The children enjoyed tasting different foods and drinking Egyptian “wine”, which was actually cherry and pomegranate juice! This was definitely one of the favourite parts of the day.
It was a brilliant way to finish our learning about Ancient Egypt and the children were engaged from start to finish. We would also like to give a special shout out to Hilary for generously donating all of the resources she created for the day. She has clearly spent many hours preparing these and they will be incredibly useful in helping our school bring Ancient Egypt to life for future classes too.
Thank you again to Hilary Wilson for giving Year 4 such an exciting and unforgettable experience.
