This evening, we had the absolute privilege of welcoming a very special little lady to Trawden Forest Primary School. Meet Shadow, a beautiful hedgehog who has been given a wonderful second chance at life!
Shadow has had quite an incredible journey. When she was first rescued, she weighed just 172g and was in a desperately poor condition. She was suffering from lungworm, fluke and flystrike, and needed several courses of worming treatment and antibiotics to help her recover. Thanks to the incredible dedication, patience and care, this brave little girl has made a remarkable recovery and now weighs a healthy 685g!
Shadow was originally found near a road, with no suitable safe habitat nearby for her to return to. We were therefore absolutely honoured when we were asked if we could offer her a new home in our Forest School grounds.
This evening, Mrs Nelson made the special journey to collect Shadow from Willow Top Hedgehog Rescue and bring her to her new home at school. Once back, Shadow was carefully transferred from her travelling box into her new hedgehog house, where she can begin settling into her new surroundings. With our extensive school grounds, plenty of natural habitat, a cosy home and supplementary food and water, we hope she will have everything she needs to thrive.
We are also hoping to capture some footage of Shadow exploring her new home using our wildlife camera. What a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn more about these fascinating creatures, the challenges they face and the importance of protecting our native wildlife.
A heartfelt thank you to Donna and the volunteers at Willow Top Hedgehog Rescue for the outstanding care they have given Shadow. The dedication involved in nursing such a poorly little hedgehog back to health is truly remarkable, and we are so grateful to have been trusted with the next chapter of her life.
Welcome to Trawden Forest Primary School, Shadow! 🦔
